LEAVE THE PAST BEHIND

Stress is designed to be felt in the present to urge you into action, but broader anxieties can cause you to ruminate on the past. You might dwell on something you said or did that you regret, or something you wish you could change but can’t. You might idealize the past as being better than the present, or you might feel things have been unfair. This kind of thinking causes difficult-to-resolve stress that robs you of joy in the present. Don’t let past things that can’t be changed ruin your present too. Let go with this meditation in order to live in the here and now.

1. Identify if your thoughts during meditation are replaying something from the past that has already happened.

2. Reflect on any feelings that accompany this situation. Pay particular attention to any sense of helplessness around something you can’t change, any feeling of unfairness coming from your ego and your expectations, as well as any wistfulness for an imagined ideal.

3. Ask yourself the following questions about this memory: Can I control or influence this situation or its impacts now? Ten minutes from now, will this matter? Will it matter in ten days? Ten months? Ten years?

4. As you consider time lines further into the future, notice whether your feelings about this event and its significance shift or change at all. Set a resolution to be fully present and alive, here and now.
